The History of Tau Chapter
Celebrating 100 years of Service to the Bloomington Community & Beyond
On December 16, 1922, Tau Chapter became an official chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️. The chapter was the first African-American sorority on the campus of Indiana University and on record was chartered by five audacious women:
Mabel Lee Alexander
Mattie Mae Fellows
Ethel Reed Marshall
Alethea Sylvesta Miles
Daisy Araminta Payne
Ethel V. Harnett and Hallie G. Peoples were also instrumental to the group's success, but did not return to the campus during the fall of 1922. Since that time, Tau Chapter has matured and prospered and is continuously known for her strong presence on campus, regionally, and even nationally.
Ladies of Tau Chapter carry themselves with pride and place their education in the highest regard. Furthermore, the chapter consistently provides the campus with educational and entertaining programming and serves as mentors and role models to the community. Tau Chapter carries a rich tradition of heritage and vows not to rest upon the strong legacy, but to continue to set the pace for others to follow.
